Erwin papers, 1873-1973 (bulk 1950-1961)

Correspondence, research notes, printed material and one scrapbook of photographs and copies of legal documents resulting from Erwin's research of John Slaughter's life. Predominantly research about the Slaughter family; but also includes the research of San Bernadino Ranch, Spanish land grants, the Lincoln County War, and people such as Charles Shibbell, Henry Lawton, Tom Horn and others. Correspondence includes letters from Frank King discussing John Slaughter, the Apache Kid, and John Ringo, and letters from Slaughter family members provide family history. A scrapbook compiled by Erwin contains photocopies of Slaughter's marriage certificate, will, etc. as well as photographs of the Slaughter family members, cowboys, and ranching scenes. There is also a photograph of a Douglas, Ariz. bar and an 1899 mule team hauling coke from St. David to Bisbee. Photographs are also present of Texas and Arizona ranchers, lawmen and others including John Bouldin, Pancho Anderson, Sam Hayhurst, Will Chisum, Joe Hill, John L. Larrieu, Apache May, and Leonard Alverson.

Biographical note: Rancher; John Slaughter served two terms as Cochise County Sheriff beginning in 1887, served a term in the Arizona Legislature in 1906, helped to develop the town of Douglas, Arizona, and was a stockholder in the Bank of Douglas. In 1883, John Slaughter purchased about 40,000 acres of the San Bernadino Land Grant in southeastern Arizona on the Mexican border. Frank M. King, cowboy, ranchman, editor, and author, was born in Los Angeles in 1863. King, who was one-quarter Cherokee Indian, went to Texas with his family in 1873, then to Indian Territory.
